Community Resources

As an important part of our mission, we believe in arming our membership with a wide variety of resources, which offer assistance in their lives, work and communities. The following are a number of available resources and coalition organizations, which we use to further the protection and enfranchisement of working men and women in the Hudson Valley. In carrying out this mission, the Department administers a variety of Federal labor laws including those that guarantee workers’ rights to safe and healthful working conditions; a minimum hourly wage and overtime pay; freedom from employment discrimination; unemployment insurance; and other income support.

There are several components to The Workers' Rights Law Center's (WRLC) work. First, the Center's staff provides free legal services to low-wage workers struggling to enforce their rights in the workplace. Second, the Center contributes to the empowerment of workers by educating workers about their labor and civil rights. The WRLC seeks to work collaboratively with local labor unions, workers' groups, and other community groups to protect the rights of workers in the region.
The Fiscal Policy Institute (FPI) is a nonpartisan research and education organization that focuses on the broad range of tax, budget, economic and related public policy issues that affect the quality of life and the economic well-being of New York State residents. Founded in 1991, FPI's work is intended to further the development and implementation of public policies that create a strong economy in which prosperity is broadly shared by all New Yorkers.
Founded in 1987, Jobs with Justice's mission is to improve working people's standard of living, fight for job security, and protect workers' right to organize. JwJ's core belief is that in order to be successful, workers' rights struggles have to be part of a larger campaign for economic and social justice. To that end, JwJ has created a network of local coalitions that connect labor, faith-based, community, and student organizations to work together on workplace and community social justice campaigns.
Good Jobs First is a national policy resource center for grassroots groups and public officials, promoting corporate and government accountability in economic development and smart growth for working families. We provide timely, accurate information on best practices in state and local job subsidies, and on the many ties between smart growth and good jobs. Good Jobs First works with a very broad spectrum of organizations, providing research, training, communications and consulting assistance.
Citizen Action of New York is a statewide membership organization founded in 1983. We have individual members and are a coalition of labor, senior citizen, women's, student, tenant and community organizations that works with community activists for social and economic justice. We fight for quality affordable health care for all, jobs that pay living wages with decent benefits, expanded Medicare coverage for seniors that includes prescription drugs, strong investment in public education and after-school programs, campaign finance reform, an end to corporate tax loopholes and tax breaks for the wealthy, and consumer protections.
Rural & Migrant Ministry Inc. acts to overcome the prejudices and poverty that degrade and debilitate all members of our society, by building communities that celebrate diversity, achieve true mutuality and offer dignity and opportunity to all. Rural & Migrant Ministry is an interfaith organization whose members believe that inspiration comes from participation in the creation of a just world.

Interfaith Worker Justice (IWJ) calls upon our religious values in order to educate, organize, and mobilize the religious community in the U.S. on issues and campaigns that will improve wages, benefits, and working conditions for workers, especially low-wage workers.

Workers Independent News producers gather news from labor unions and activists from across the country.  WIN is well-connected with existing labor media projects, progressive grassroots radio programs and Independent Media Centers.

Labor Religion Coalition
of New York

www.labor-religion.org

Across New York State and the country a growing movement is bringing workers and their supporters in unions, religious institutions and youth groups together in efforts to challenge corporate control and to move toward greater economic justice. Specifically, workers, trade unionists, people of faith and young people are uniting to fight sweatshop conditions at home and abroad and to end child labor. They also are actively leading campaigns that call upon municipalities to require that those doing business with government pay living wages.

The mission of Quality Care NY is to improve the quality of care for individuals with developmental disabilities and the quality of work life for the workers who provide that care.  Quality Care NY believes that children and adults with developmental disabilities deserve the highest quality of care and services that can be provided.  Quality care begins with making sure the people who provide that care, direct care workers, are treated with fairness and respect.
